Best Ways to Store Your Cigars

Today we’re going to talk about some of the best ways to store your cigars. Whether your passion for cigars is a new one or you’re a veteran cigar smoker the question always comes up – what is the best place to store my cigar?  We’re going to give you some good tips and recommendations on some of the best ways to store your cigar.

First off, you need to know how long you are going to be storing your cigar.  Are you going on a weekend trip?  Out to the golf course?  Or are you wanting to save a nice box for several months or even years?

Something to keep in mind while we touch on some of the best ways to store you cigar is that cigars originate from tropical places and they preform best in those conditions.  Ideally, you want to keep your cigar in a warm humid environment.  Think warm Dominican beach!  That’s where you want your cigar to be.  Unfortunately, we cannot spend our days on a nice sandy beach, but we can do our best to keep our cigars well hydrated and at the right temperature.

As many of you know, a humidor is the best place store your cigars.  Think of your humidor as a nice Dominican beach!  That’s where you want your cigar to be – right back at home.  Humidors help protect your cigar by keeping the temperature constant as well as keeping the moisture at the right levels.  Keeping these two consistent will ensure that your cigar will not dry out or become too wet and will give you the best smoke possible.  Often times aging your cigar in a humidor for a few weeks or even months will help enhance the flavor of the smoke and if you have many different blends in your box these can blend together giving your smokes much a richer and more complex flavor.

If you’re just leaving the store and going to be smoking your cigar within the next day or so, you should be good to keep it in a zip lock bag.  The store should provide you with a bag and if they don’t make sure to ask for one.  You want to avoid leaving the cigar in the direct sun light or in a heavily air conditioned or heated room, this can dry them out very quickly.  If you know you’re going to be in a very hot and dry area then you can put a damp paper towel in the bag with the cigar, but make sure it’s not too wet and you don’t leave it in for more than a day or so to avoid any possible molding.  This only for short term storage.

If you travel a lot, even if you’re just taking them out for a day or two, it’s recommended to invest in a travel humidor.  These will help you keep them nice and fresh on the go.  If you’re just going to the golf course or to a BBQ with friends then you want to make sure you protect the cigars in some kind of case.  We recommend a leather case which will usually hold anywhere from 3 to 5 cigars at a time depending on the size of the cigar.  It happens to the best of us, from time to time, where you might accidently set on a cigar to hit with your bag – it cracks – and then you just simple out the smoke.  A cigar case is an easy solution to avoid any damage.

If you’re buying a five dollar cigar or a twenty-five dollar cigar you’re not going to get the most out of it if it’s not properly cared for.  Just follow these easy steps and you’re sure to get all the great flavor and enjoyment out of your smoke.
